For a start, i have never voted for Mahinda Rajapakse(MR) or UPFA in my whole life(i did vote one time and it was for JHU).However i always supported him and his party and argued with so many on behalf of what he has done so far and what he stands for. Since in my personal opinion, after the war what we need is a strong leader that can give political stability in order to pursuit the economic development what we all hoping for where i don’t see any one else other than him who cam give that leadership. Same time whether any one like it or not, i stand for a strong national state with a strong consciousness about who we are while not being an easy pushover just because we are a insignificant island in the world stage. In that respect MR delivers what i think that is best for the country even though the way he do it something to ponder about.
So coming back to the topic, where is this all leading to? Lets look at what are the two main arguments against him.
First corruption, problem with this argument is that people who argue about corruption argue on this like it all came with MR forgetting for the last 50 years our system was corrupt as it is now. There for rather than changing the system by changing the people will not solve this problem and there lies the fault with MR. Unlike the previous leaders who were as corrupt as anybody didn’t had the power to change the system, but MR who is with 2/3 majority in the parliament is well within him self the necessary power to change all this. Unfortunately i don’t think he has the political will nor the desire to change it.
Then comes the nepotism. For me, being a relation of MR doesn’t make some one not suitable for handling some post or any responsibility as long as he is capable and suitable. That is why, i don’t have any problems with Gota and Basil. However is it right that Namal just because he is the son of the president getting political advantage over other young MPs? Same time now it seems unless you have some political patronage to the govt. or you know some one in the govt. it is next to impossible to get something done in this country unless you have money of course so then you can bribe your way through.
To conclude, i am happy of MR for what he has achieved so far, but bit worry about the things he would or would not achieve in the future.
